A random question. Since definitions can change.
freedictionary.com's definition of a poem is: a verbal composition designed to convey experiences, ideas, or emotions in a vivid and imaginative way, characterized by the use of language chosen for its sound and suggestive power and by the use of literary techniques such as meter, metaphor, and rhyme. But if you've been with poetry for a while now you must have noticed the changes poetry has been going through. For example, (because I do not want to upset persnickety classmates, who will and must point out that I am making a universal generalization of poetry) compare romantic poetry and contemporary poetry, again. The concepts of and in poetry have changed into something that is more abstract and connects the readers on a human level (relatable), instead glued to events or historical facts. Because poetry is morphing with the times, do you think it is possible for poetry to be visual icons? Once upon a time when AOL was popular we use to type out, 'laugh out loud,' soon laugh out loud became 'LOL.' LOL became a semi colon and a 'D' (:D). In the years to come will this be poetry? Must we involve words to create a poem?
