poetry strikes back

hey all. im back on the blog for the third time with theo now. DAM! ive been hoping there was another poetry class i could take after techniques- low and behold- i found it randomly, not realizing we even had an adv. class. im really excited about the lack guidelines on the assignments, because it allows for a more fun assignment, at least for me. im not one for strict rules in any sense, but open projects, papers, and assignments are what i enjoy way more. i got into poetry accidentally a few summers ago on a trip to rhode island with a few friends. he had put on some hip hop and the song was utterly ridiculous to me- "we make it rain remix" by fat joe and lil wayne. i hated hip hop at the time and reluctantly let him put on some songs. there was nothin really special in the song except for lil waynes verse- it wasnt his words...in fact it was the complete opposite! he started out the verse with "blat, blat". its strange to write it because unles you know the song you have no sense of how it goes, or maybe you might not like it. but either way it struck me, and i was very intrigued. at that moment it hit me that poetry wasnt just working with words and that his opening line was, to me, the essence of poetry. i find it very funny because it was a hit song, which people stop listening to the second the next top track comes out, and its content was purely ridiculous. it the hollow 'money and hoes' bullshit that mainstream hiphop is all about. but his part just showed me creativity and its even kind of cool that i can pinpoint the exact moment in time that i became interested in both hip hop and poetry. so that is why im here
